FROM THIS WATER I’LL NOT DRINK
A Portuguese proverb close to “never say never”, a reminder of how certainty shifts with time and circumstance.
BÉHEN brings the vernacular world of Nazaré into conversation with ir a banhos, the Portuguese culture of seaside bathing that developed from the late 19th into the early 20th century, when the town was simultaneously a working fishing community and a seasonal destination for leisure and social display.
For Spring/Summer 2027, these references are contrasted with more formal and structured codes of dress. Silhouettes associated with office wear and tailoring, classical shirting fabrics and refined shapes meet traditional techniques, folklore and materials connected to everyday work. The contrast recalls the social worlds that historically existed side by side in Nazaré, particularly visible on the beach, where working life and leisure shared the same space.
The collection thus explores the shoreline as a place of shifting meanings: protection and exposure, necessity and privilege, permanence and change, all continuously shaped by the sea.
Materials include 100% cotton and wool, alongside antique and repurposed textiles.
