SONHOS DE MENINO [Boyhood Dreams]

The collection begins with childhood and the way memory transforms what we experience into what we choose to remember. It is an idyllic vision of a time gone by, shaped by events and recollections that, as time passes, come to resemble a dream more than a memory.

The grandmother’s house emerges as one of the central places of that childhood. It was there that he grew up, discovered his passions and began, without yet realising it, to imagine what he might one day become. It is also where the image of his grandmother remains: already old, her hands wrinkled by time and work, dressed in black, wearing gold earrings, her hair hidden beneath a scarf and a woollen shawl over her shoulders.

In contrast comes the image of the boy: striped sweaters, loose clothes, worn trainers, short shorts and the bright colours of someone still living between play and discovery. Two seemingly opposing images, old age and childhood, black and colour, care and discovery, work and play, which, despite their differences, naturally complemented one another.

The grandmother cared for him while the boy dreamed. He, in turn, grew up under her watch, protected by that place and her presence. Their relationship was built on simple, everyday acts that remain fundamental images of that time.

From these images, the collection deconstructs and reconstructs references through silhouettes, volumes, proportions and materials. Elements associated with the grandmother’s clothes and the boy’s clothes intersect and transform: some forms repeat themselves, others are enlarged and deconstructed, while always retaining something familiar.

The collection inhabits a space between what happened and what remains, between memory and dream, between the one who cared and the one who dreamed. The grandmother’s death left an absence, but also made the memories of that time more present. The collection is dedicated to her as a way of preserving what remains, because many of his boyhood dreams were born within the walls of her home.
