Fashion, Sustainability
MUDE – Museu do Design, in Lisbon, is the host and co-organizer of the international conference “Codes of Conduct. Responsibility and Ethics in Fashion Heritage” by the European Fashion Heritage Association (EFHA), of which it is a founding member. The event will take place on November 21st and 22nd at MUDE, with free entry and mandatory registration, here.
“Codes of Conduct. Responsibility and Ethics in Fashion Heritage” aims to discuss current challenges, as well as propose a new path for the future of fashion heritage preservation. Through discussions and exchanges of ideas, it seeks to promote more responsible and ethical management, considering both the historical significance of fashion collections and the needs of present and future generations.
At a time when cultural institutions are being challenged to reinvent themselves in the face of new social and technological realities, the conference offers an opportunity to think about fashion as cultural heritage in a more inclusive, sustainable, and ethical way.
During the two-day event, renowned national and international experts will share their experiences and research, addressing topics such as the relationship between private and public collections, the role of cultural institutions in education and the promotion of diversity, the ethics of preserving and exhibiting fashion collections, among others.
On the first day, the panel “The Private and the Public: Modes of Intersection” will discuss the interplay between public institutions and private collectors, with presentations by experts such as Annick Schramme & Laura D’hoore from the University of Antwerp, and Piotr Szaradowski from the Muzealne Mody Foundation. The panel “Backstage / Frontstage – Curatorial Responsibility” will focus on curatorial responsibilities, the ethics of preserving and displaying, with contributions from professionals such as Cyana Madsen from the London College of Fashion, and Anabela Becho and Inês Matias from MUDE – Museu do Design, in Lisbon.
On the second day, the panel “Re-Mapping Fashion: Politics & Poetics of Local Heritage” will focus on local heritage and craft practices, bringing perspectives from experts such as Ornella Cirillo, Vicenza Caterino, Andrea Chiara Bonanno from the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, and Binil Mohan from JK Lakshmipat University.
Other panels will explore new policies and perspectives to rethink and preserve fashion collections, as well as the challenges related to the conservation of historical objects.
The main goal of the event is to present new perspectives on how to ensure that the legacy of fashion is preserved and shared in a fair and responsible manner, benefiting both the present and the future.
